Alberta Health Services offers free Healthcare Assistant (HCA) courses and certification
AHS offers a training program for uncertified HCAs to become certified, through which newly hired uncertified HCAs receive mentorship and support to attend licensed HCA educational programs. The program enables HCAs to continue working while becoming certified. The program takes approximately 8-12 months to complete and tuition is covered by AHS. HCA Responsibilities
Provide support and comfort to patients, clients and residents in daily living by assisting with bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting and other personal hygiene activities, as well as feeding, mobility and exercise as needed
Communicate effectively with patients, their families and their team members
Report their observations and communicate concerns to nurses and other licensed health care professionals
Provide assistance and support services to those who are ill, elderly or disabled
Provide dignified care, compassion and support to those with chronic and/or complex medical conditions, physical or cognitive impairments or who are dying
